PS5, Xbox or PS4 overheating? Why a clean and re-paste fixes it

A console that sounds like it's about to take off, runs hot to the touch, or suddenly shuts itself down mid-game is one of the most common jobs I see — and the good news is it's nearly always a simple, affordable fix rather than a dead machine.

The tell-tale signs

• Fan noise — a loud whoosh or whir that wasn't there when the console was new.
• Heat — the exhaust air is hot rather than warm, and the case is uncomfortable to touch.
• Sudden shutdowns — the console powers off on its own, often with a temperature warning, usually during a demanding game.
• Frame-rate drops — games that ran smoothly start stuttering after 20–30 minutes as the console throttles itself.

What's actually happening inside

Two things build up over the years. First, dust — pulled in by the cooling fan, it mats together in the heatsink fins and vents until air can barely pass through. Second, the thermal paste between the main processor (the APU) and the heatsink dries out, cracks and stops carrying heat away. The console tries to compensate by running its fan flat out — that's the noise — and when even that isn't enough, it throttles performance or shuts down to protect the hardware.

The fix: a full strip-down, clean and re-paste

I take the console right down to the board, clear every bit of dust from the fan, heatsink and vents, clean off the old dried compound, and apply fresh thermal compound. On PlayStation consoles I use premium liquid metal, which suits their cooling design; on Xbox I use high-grade thermal paste, which is the right choice for those boards. Reassembled and tested, it runs cooler, much quieter, and stops shutting down.

What you can do in the meantime

Stand the console upright with plenty of clear space around it, keep it out of an enclosed cabinet, and give the outside vents a quick going-over with a soft brush. That buys a little time — but once the paste has dried out, only opening it up will properly fix it.
