Broken HDMI port on your PS5, PS4 or Xbox — can it be fixed?

Your console powers on — fans spinning, light on — but the TV shows "No signal". The HDMI socket feels loose, or you can see a bent pin inside it. Nine times out of ten that's a damaged HDMI port, and it's one of the most common console repairs there is. The console isn't a write-off.

How HDMI ports get damaged

• The cable gets knocked while it's plugged in — a foot catching it, the console pulled off a shelf, a pet — levering the port and cracking its solder joints or bending the pins.
• The console is moved with the cable still in, putting sideways strain on the socket.
• Wear over years of plugging and unplugging, especially with a stiff or heavy cable.

The HDMI port is soldered directly to the mainboard on 19 tiny pins plus shielding tabs. When one of those connections cracks, or a pin bends into its neighbour, the video signal doesn't get through — so the console runs fine but sends no picture.

Is it definitely the port?

Rule out the easy things first: try a different HDMI cable, a different socket on the TV, and another screen entirely. If a known-good cable and TV still give you nothing — and the console's socket looks bent, wobbles, or has visible damage — it's the port. This guide walks through the full checklist.

The repair

This is board-level micro-soldering. I assess the board under magnification, lift the damaged port off with a hot-air rework station, clean and re-tin the pads, fit a fresh HDMI connector, and test it on a screen before it goes back together. Done carefully, it's a permanent fix — the console is as good as it was.

When it's not worth it

If the board has been running with a shorted port for a while, or a previous "repair" has torn the pads off the board, the job gets bigger. I'll always check first and tell you honestly whether it's a straightforward port swap or something more — with a fixed quote before any work starts.
